The San Diego Gulls are a part of the American Hockey League, based out of San Diego, California. First, in 2015, the Anaheim Ducks acquired the Norfolk Admirals American Hockey League franchise. Afterward, they moved its headquarters to the southern California city. The Gulls began their first season in 2015-2016.
Henry and Susan Samueli, the owner’s of the Anaheim’s Ducks, added the Ducks to four other California affiliated teams.
These teams include:
The Los Angeles Kings, located out of Ontario, California
The San Jose Sharks, located out of San Jose, California
The Calgary Flames, located out of Stockton, California
The Edmonton Oilers, located out of Bakersfield, California.
The five California based hockey teams established the American Hockey League Pacific Division.
Hockey was first highlighted in San Diego in 1944. Since then, the San Diego Skyhawks of the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) were the first San Diego team to win the PCHL title. They won the title in the 1948-1949 season. Following the Skyhawks PCHL win, the first San Diego Gulls of the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) went on to win five more titles. Since being established, they have won these titles in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2003.
Their first home game was on October 10th, 2015 where the Gulls lost to the Grand Rapids Griffins two to four. Afterward, they concluded their first season with a record of 39-23-4-2. Also, they earned second place in the Pacific Division. In addition, they earned fifth in the Western Conference. For the inaugural season, Dallas Eakins was the head coach. His assistant coach was Marty Wilford.
The Ontario Reign’s are the Los Angeles Kings American Hockey League affiliate. Each game played against each other is a rivalry night. As always, fans bring their energy and competitive game faces to each rivalry game. The rivalry has previously gone to division finals and playoff games. These are some of the most popular games for San Diego Gull’s fans.
In the 2016 division finals, the Gulls lost to the Ontario Reign four to one in a best of seven series. This was the Gulls first time playing in the Calder Cup Playoffs. They had initially won against the Texas stars three games to one with a six-two victory. Their advancement following this win led them to play the Ontario Reign. During this playoff series, they lost the final game. This meant the Gulls had given the Calder Cup to the Ontario Reign. Luckily for the San Diego Gulls, one year later, they were able to get their revenge. The Gulls won the 2017 Calder Cup playoffs against the Ontario Reign, three games to two. Their win was during the division semifinals.
During each American Hockey League season, the Gulls play sixty-eight games. The season is from October to April. Then, it leads up to the Calder Cup Playoffs, which scheduled from April through June. The San Diego Gulls play their home games at the Valley View Casino Center in downtown San Diego.
