For certain people, a DIY gatorplast board is more than sufficient. However, if you are a business, the professionals are the best course of action. Your signage should reflect your professionalism and a DIY sign doesn’t put you in the best light. The adhesive that seals the cap sheets and the foam is durable for outdoor use. There is one thing to consider, though. It’s a polystyrene product, so if it is exposed to direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time, then it will become brittle and start to yellow. That means a protective coating is a must to protect it from the damaging UV rays. If you plan to use it for any extended period of time outdoors, then a protective coating is an absolute must.
One of the greatest benefits of gatorplast is that is can resist water. Moisture is one of the biggest weaknesses for paper or wood-based panels. Gatorplast can resist that problem. However, it will warp if it’s exposed to excessive heat. Additionally, it can warp if you apply too much force. Of course, this will depend on the gatorplast thickness. The thicker it is the more it will withstand warping. Other issues that may cause warping includes poor support for the sign, as well as uneven coating. It’s also important to store your signs safely, you must ensure they are flat.
There are plenty of options available when it comes to gatorplast thickness. The thinnest option is 3/16”, but you can also choose from 1/2”, 3/4”, and a full inch. Of course, we are proud to offer custom thicknesses, which are available up to three inches thick. The ideal thickness for your particular sign may also be dependent on the overall size of the board that you choose. It doesn’t matter what gatorplast thickness that you choose, there are certain cleaning rules you need to follow. It’s the best way to ensure that your sign lasts. So, when the sheets rub against each other, they create a static charge. The biggest problem with that is that they are prone to dust. So, use a simple tack cloth to dust your signs regularly. It’s also important to ensure the boards are free from other contaminants. For that, you can use a dust-free rag along with some rubbing alcohol.

If you plan to cut your own gatorplast board, then there are a few tips we can offer you. You should always avoid dragging the blade when you’re working with an edge that is freshly cut. The board should be cut briskly to avoid wobbles. Before you mount your sign, paint it or print on it, you need to clean it.
There are a variety of methods to rely on for cutting your gatorplast. A router is the perfect choice if you want to cut shapes or contour edges. This is something that needs to be done briskly for the best effects. What happens if you take it too slow? Too much heat and friction. This will impact the quality of the cut. It’s also possible to die cut your board. This is only suitable for boards of less than half an inch thick. This cut requires careful attention. Then, there’s the guillotine. This is also for a thinner board. You can cut the board using a utility knife. This will produce a supremely clean edge. The majority of cutters can only handle a board that is 3/16” or thinner. The thicker the board is the more tedious the process will be.
Typically, white gatorplast is the standard. However, it’s also available in black. Don’t forget that you can paint your sign, so the base color doesn’t really matter a whole lot. White is obviously an easier base color to deal with if you plan to paint a lighter color. You should hold off on the paint job until after you have cut the gatorplast as you want it. Or, you could just leave it in the hands of the professionals.
So, what about painting and screen printing on gatorplast? Paint is an easy option, all you need to do is ensure the board is clean before you tackle the job. Water-based paints are the best way forward, though there are certain solvent-based paints that will work fine. The key is to check whether your paint is compatible to use with polystyrene. Some paints just won’t adhere to the material.
When it comes to the ink we use for screen printing, it’s down to UV inks or solvent-based ones. The latter dry easily. UV ink comes with some challenges. To use the drying lamp may lead to some warping. It’s only temporary, though. It should easily return to its original form once the sheet has time to cool. So, you see just how complicated the entire process can be. Which is why we always recommend that you let us deal with the most difficult aspects of creating gatorplast signs.
